Women To Be Drafted Along With Men

Sharing is Caring!

The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved an amendment that would require all women in the U.S. to register with the Selective Service System. This system maintains information on individuals who can be called up to serve in the military through the draft. The amendment is part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and amends the Military Selective Service Act to include women in the registration processIf enacted, this legislation would mark the first time in the nation’s history that young women would be required to register for the draft alongside men.

This move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider a case challenging the constitutionality of the existing male-only draft. The court deferred to Congress to address the matter legislatively rather than rendering an opinion on the draft system. Calls to include women in the draft have grown, especially since all combat roles were opened to female service members in 2015. Notably, the Senate previously voted in 2016 to add women to the draft, with support from both parties.

The bill will now move to the Senate floor for further consideration.
