Why is Reddit the greatest source for tech, worst source for investing.

Sharing is Caring!

2023 was the year I realised the power of Reddit. I am really impressed by the quality of knowledge and how helpful people are. Also, compared to other platforms (like FB), I see no hate speech, and respect (self sarcasm is more often). This is an experience I truly felt when I started participating.

Also, I am impressed by the the sense of a community, and their great knowledge in some AI related discussions (a new passion for me are LLMs). However, the investing and stock market channels, lack people of knowledge, and even if people try to help each other, the advice in Reddit is a recipe for economic disaster. People who know a thing or are experienced investors are really rare, and don’t use Reddit.

My explanation is that Reddit started with tech as its main vertical. IT people became wealthy through high wages, and discovered the stock market which became the second vertical. Tech is a place that great outcomes can come through smarts, but the stock market needs a different skillset, and it’s like theatre or sports (maybe the top 1% is capable to achieve something great). So we have a situation, that helpful and smart people in a great community repeatedly offer disservice to investing.

How do you think that this can be improved? How can you drag into the platform more experienced and non-tech oriented people, who don’t know the magic of reddit, or they disregard it because of the quality of investing content. I have been investing for more than 20 years, heard of reddit a few years ago, but 2023 was the year I got engaged. This would not have happened if I did not develop passion about LLMs and AI.

Is it right to think that Reddit great for tech, a joke for the stock market, or it’s my rookie state in AI and experience in investing, that make me feel this way?

Please, offer your perspective.
