The United States has officially slapped a 17% duty on most fresh tomato imports from Mexico. The move, announced July 14, follows the collapse of negotiations between the Commerce Department and Mexican officials. The tariff took effect immediately and is aimed at reversing a two-decade shift in tomato sourcing. Mexico now supplies 70% of the U.S. tomato market, up from 30% in the early 2000s. The Florida Tomato Exchange pushed hard for the change, citing dumping concerns and price distortions that have hollowed out domestic growers.
