The battlefield rules have changed. Western allies have officially lifted all restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons, allowing Kyiv to strike Russian military targets without range limitations. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed the shift, stating that the UK, France, Germany, and the US have removed all constraints on how Ukraine deploys its Western-supplied arsenal.
Germany’s stance marks a major policy shift. Merz’s announcement signals a break from previous restrictions that limited Ukraine’s ability to target Russian positions beyond occupied Ukrainian territory. The decision follows months of pressure from Kyiv, which has argued that hitting Russian military infrastructure deep inside enemy territory is essential for defense.
The Kremlin is furious. Russian officials have condemned the move, calling it “dangerous” and warning that it could escalate the conflict further. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that lifting range restrictions “runs contrary to efforts for a political settlement”, signaling Moscow’s frustration with the West’s growing military support for Ukraine.
Ukraine’s military gains new capabilities. With no range limits, Ukraine can now deploy long-range missiles against Russian logistics hubs, command centers, and supply routes. The UK has already supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles, while the US has provided Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). Germany has long debated sending Taurus cruise missiles, and Merz’s latest comments suggest that decision may be imminent.
The West is doubling down. The policy shift reflects a broader strategy to increase pressure on Moscow after Russia launched its largest drone barrage against Ukraine in over three years. European leaders have condemned the attacks, arguing that Ukraine must be given the tools to strike back effectively. The war enters a new phase. With Ukraine now cleared to hit targets deep inside Russia, the conflict’s dynamics are shifting.
