US set to enforce Real ID for domestic flights by May 2025.

Sharing is Caring!

The U.S. government’s impending Real ID program, set to take effect on May 7, 2025, has ignited fierce criticism over privacy and state surveillance concerns. This new requirement will force all adults to replace traditional state-issued IDs with Real IDs to board domestic flights, leaving many questioning its necessity and impact.

Originally passed in 2005 after the September 11 attacks, the Real ID Act was intended to tighten security by standardizing state-issued identification. Proponents argue it prevents fraudulent IDs like those used by 18 of the 19 hijackers during the attacks. However, critics warn the program is a covert step toward creating a national ID system, enhancing federal surveillance under the guise of security.

Privacy advocates are especially alarmed by the mandatory collection of digital facial images, compatible with facial recognition technology, raising concerns over potential misuse and erosion of personal freedoms. Despite issuing 162 million Real ID-compliant cards by January 2024, representing 56% of cardholders, millions still lack the required ID.

The looming deadline threatens to disrupt domestic air travel, with many Americans unprepared or unwilling to comply. This controversial program underscores a deeper debate: how far should security measures go before infringing on fundamental privacy rights?
