England national team defender faces punishment over message on rainbow captain’s armband
Guéhi, as captain of Crystal Palace, wrote a religious message on the rainbow armband, a symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement, which all Premier League captains wore during the latest matchweek as part of a special initiative.
On his armband, Guéhi inscribed the phrase: “I love Jesus.”
This act violated IFAB’s regulations, which state: “Equipment must not have any political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images.”
Guéhi is now likely to receive a monetary fine as a penalty.
ESPN has learned that Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guéhi could face an English Football Association (FA) charge after writing "I love Jesus" on his rainbow-coloured captain's armband for Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United. pic.twitter.com/OQhDpK8P7Y
