I use this airport regularly. When you watch the video, you’ll see how those trays are stacked up before getting scanned.
Just recently, my stuff was queued up in a bunch just like in this video, but I refused to go through the scanner without my stuff being passed through at the same time. I’m almost certain that the big black guy who was arrested was the one who challenged me on the other side of the queue. He told me to keep moving. I refused. I told him that I was not going to leave my stuff unattended. He backed off.
I’ve never seen a TSA agent back off. Have you? I’m 95% positive that is the same guy.
