This is one of those stories that does not get much attention but could matter a lot.
A new poll puts Democrats ahead 50 percent to 42 percent in a hypothetical midterm vote, giving them an early 8 point advantage.
At the same time, The Wall Street Journal reports a growing number of Republican lawmakers from districts they already know they are losing have little incentive to show up, negotiate, or help move legislation.
That creates what some are calling a zombie Congress.
Lawmakers are still in office.
They just have less reason to fight for difficult votes or stick closely to the party agenda.
If that trend grows, Trump’s biggest challenge may not be Democrats.
It may be getting enough Republicans to stay engaged long enough to pass his priorities before campaign season completely takes over.
Meanwhile, Democrats are dealing with their own internal battles after several progressive primary victories, showing both parties are becoming harder to keep united.
The closer the midterms get, the harder it becomes to pass anything controversial.
That is usually when politics shifts from governing to campaigning.
