President Trump has repeatedly said that voter fraud should be punished harshly, including prison time.
Governor Gavin Newsom publicly agreed with Trump on that point, tweeting: “Trump says voter fraud should land people in prison. Agreed.”
Shortly afterward, Newsom signed Senate Bill 73 (on May 27, 2026), which:
Prohibits unauthorized access, disruption, modification, or seizure of voter rolls, voter lists, or certified voting technology without a court order.
Restricts law enforcement (including federal agents) from interfering with election workers or accessing voting systems without proper authorization.
“In California, I just signed a law making that punishable with up to 3 years behind bars. More to come. FAFO, Donald,” the governor concluded.
“And let’s start with the politicians spreading election lies with the goal of illegally interfering with counting ballots.”
