The Trump administration has taken a significant step in its immigration policy by empowering federal law enforcement agencies, such as the DEA and ATF, to carry out deportations. Outlined in a memo by acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman, this measure aims to fulfill a major campaign promise by executing the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. To support this effort, the administration plans to borrow agents from the Justice Department and deploy additional military personnel to the southern border.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has expanded its expedited deportation powers, allowing rapid removal of illegal immigrants unable to prove their residency in the U.S. for at least two years. Previous limitations confined expedited removal to those found within 100 miles of the border or who had recently arrived; these restrictions have now been lifted, enabling nationwide enforcement.
Moreover, the Trump administration warned that mayors and local leaders who obstruct mass deportation efforts could face arrest. As emphasized by Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller on “Jesse Watters Primetime,” officials shielding migrants from deportation will face legal repercussions.
