President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from the European Union. During a recent cabinet meeting, Trump stated that the European Union was formed to “screw the United States” and that the U.S. has been taken advantage of in trade relations. He specifically mentioned car imports and farm products as areas where the U.S. has been treated unfairly.
The tariffs are set to go into effect on April 2, 2025, and will apply to a wide range of goods imported from the EU. This move is expected to provoke retaliatory actions from the EU’s 27 member countries, potentially leading to higher prices for American consumers. The U.S. goods trade deficit with the European Union was $235.6 billion in 2024, a 13% increase over 2023.
