Something bigger may be developing behind the scenes.
Trump and Vladimir Putin reportedly spoke for about 85 to 90 minutes on July 4 in what the Kremlin described as a businesslike and highly constructive conversation. According to the Kremlin, Trump reiterated his willingness to help bring about the earliest possible end to the war in Ukraine.
This was not an isolated phone call.
It was reportedly the fourth conversation between the two leaders this year, suggesting regular communication even while public attention remains focused elsewhere.
The timing also stands out.
Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are reportedly preparing for a visit to Moscow, while Trump is scheduled to travel to Turkey on July 7 for the NATO summit.
That sequence raises an obvious question.
Is this simply another diplomatic conversation, or is a broader negotiating effort already underway before NATO leaders gather?
If Moscow talks move forward and a ceasefire proposal gains traction, European allies could soon face pressure to either support Trump’s approach or pursue a different strategy.
The next few days should reveal whether this was just another phone call or the start of a more serious diplomatic push.
