A report has revealed young girls were “left at the mercy” of paedophile grooming gangs in Rochdale for years because of failings by senior police and council bosses.

The review examines the time period between 2004-2013 in which it was shown that Greater Manchester Police failed with several investigations into the issue.

The police force has apologised but the outcome of the report also highlights the apparent local authority indifference to the plight of hundreds of youngsters identified as potential victims of Asian men.

The report also identifies 96 men still deemed a potential risk to children, adding that this was “only a proportion” of the numbers involved in the abuse.
