Sweden has reported the first confirmed case of the more dangerous mpox variant (clade I) outside of Africa. This variant is associated with severe illness and higher fatality rates compared to clade II, which was widespread during the 2022 outbreak in Europe and North America. The person was infected during a stay in an African region affected by the mpox outbreak. While this case doesn’t warrant additional infection control measures, health authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Clade I is also spreading rapidly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a global public health emergency.
