There have been recent technical issues with the SIX Swiss Exchange. On July 31, 2024, the exchange experienced significant disruptions due to ongoing technology problems. The initial halt began at 10 a.m. Zurich time, and although there were plans to resume trading at 11:30 a.m., the exchange had to extend the halt due to persistent technical snags.
The main issue was the inability to disseminate market pricing data, which is crucial for trading activities. This glitch affected not only the Swiss market but also the main Spanish stock market, which is owned by SIX. Trading on Spain’s IBEX stock index resumed briefly but was halted again due to the same technical problems.
This incident follows a similar technical glitch last summer, which caused the worst outage in more than a decade for the Swiss market. Such disruptions are not unique to the Swiss Exchange; other major exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange and Euronext have also faced similar issues in recent years.
The impact of these glitches can be significant, affecting the trading of some of Europe’s largest companies, including Nestle SA and Roche Holding AG. However, experts believe that while these incidents pose reputational risks, their lasting impact is usually limited.
