WASHINGTON—Senate Republicans voted down a measure to release more material related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, staying mostly united in blocking an effort led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.).
Republicans tabled, or killed, the effort in a 51-49 vote, with two GOP senators—Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Josh Hawley of Missouri—defecting to join with Democrats.
Schumer proposed the measure earlier Wednesday as an amendment to the bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act, using a rare legislative maneuver to force a vote on the matter.
“There has been so much lying, obfuscation, coverups,” Schumer told reporters on Wednesday. “The American people need to see everything that’s in the Epstein file.”
