Putin expresses willingness for direct peace talks with Ukraine; Zelenskyy demands freeze on strikes

Putin recently indicated that he’s open to direct peace talks with Ukraine, a statement that came after a failed Easter truce. This offer follows a 30-hour ceasefire that was marred by accusations of violations on both sides. Ukraine reported nearly 3,000 breaches by Russia, while Russia accused Ukraine of nearly 5,000. Despite the truce’s failure, Putin expressed a “positive attitude towards peace initiatives,” suggesting he’s willing to discuss halting strikes on civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy responded by proposing a 30-day freeze on strikes targeting civilian infrastructure as a step toward a peace agreement. Zelenskyy has emphasized that real progress requires more than just words.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has made it clear that the U.S. might step back from ceasefire efforts unless there’s tangible progress. Trump remains hopeful for a potential deal but insists on seeing real outcomes.

Diplomats from both sides are scheduled to meet in London to continue negotiations. However, past experiences suggest that these discussions are unlikely to lead to significant breakthroughs anytime soon.
