Findings from a Pew poll conducted in 2020 reveal that white liberals are disproportionately affected by mental illness compared to their conservative counterparts.
The research, encompassing white individuals across the liberal, moderate, and conservative spectrum, both male and female, indicates a significantly lower prevalence of mental health diagnoses among conservatives compared to those identifying as liberal or “very liberal.”
Of particular concern are young white women, among whom liberal identification correlates with the highest incidence of mental health diagnoses. Specifically, among white women aged 18-29, 56.3% of liberals received a mental health diagnosis, contrasted with 28.4% among moderates and 27.3% among conservatives.
