Chicago officials have walked back plans to turn a park’s football pitch fieldhouse into a migrant shelter after protests by furious locals who argued the facility provided a safe space for the city’s youth.
Last week, hundreds joined the Windy City Dolphins Youth Football League to protest the plan to turn the Amundsen Park Fieldhouse into an emergency shelter for about 200 asylum seekers as the city struggles with more than 17,000 migrants who have arrived since August 2022.
The Galewood community gathered again on Monday morning to protest the city’s plan, which proposes the football field stay open to the public while the outfield is turned into a shelter and off-limits. Activists argue kids and community members need the outfield for their activities.
The park serves as the home to six football teams and four cheerleading teams, as well as after-school programs and senior care services, and many have slammed mayor Brandon Johnson for the proposal.
‘How dare you make a decision without sitting down with us?’ said one protester, according to CBS News.
Hours after the protest, officials said the plan for an emergency tent shelter at the location was put on hold as another possible site is explored.
