California Governor Gavin Newsom is not cutting free health care for illegals, he’s expanding it. Despite headlines suggesting a budget freeze, state spending on migrant health care is set to increase from $9.5 billion to $12.1 billion, according to official finance office data.
Republican Assemblyman Carl DeMaio has called out the deception, revealing that Newsom’s claims of reducing costs are nothing more than political theater. DeMaio’s office released budget documents proving that instead of cutting spending, Newsom is increasing it by billions.
The governor’s office initially dodged questions about the numbers, pushing reporters off to the finance department. But when pressed, officials confirmed the figures, admitting that California spent over $10 billion on migrant health care this fiscal year and expects that number to rise to $12.1 billion next year.
The media’s role in gaslighting voters cannot be ignored. Newsom’s allies in the press have framed the budget changes as a rollback, misleading Californians into believing that the state is scaling back benefits. In reality, the costs are skyrocketing, placing an even greater burden on taxpayers.
California’s Medi-Cal program, which provides state-funded health care to undocumented immigrants, has been a financial disaster. Enrollment has surged beyond expectations, forcing the state to borrow billions to cover costs. Newsom’s administration initially projected $6.4 billion in expenses, but the actual price tag has exploded past $9.5 billion, with next year’s budget pushing past $12 billion.
The governor’s budget deception is now fully exposed. While Newsom claims to be making cuts, the reality is that California is doubling down on taxpayer-funded health care for illegals, even as the state faces a $12 billion deficit.
