Mount Etna erupts in Sicily, tourists run for cover as lava fountains explode

Mount Etna is erupting with full force, sending massive plumes of ash into the sky and forcing tourists to flee. The volcano, located on the eastern coast of Sicily, has entered a phase of intense activity, with lava fountains shooting from the Southeast Crater and pyroclastic flows cascading down its slopes.

The eruption began early in the morning, with seismic activity increasing throughout the night. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported that tremors reached their peak just before dawn, triggering explosive bursts of molten rock and gas. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Toulouse has issued a code red aviation warning, signaling that air travel in the region could be disrupted due to the dense ash cloud.

This is one of the most powerful eruptions Etna has seen in years. The volcano, which stands at 10,900 feet, is Europe’s tallest and most active. It has erupted frequently, but this latest event is producing continuous strombolian explosions, a sign that the activity is far from over.
