Michigan Democrats push for “Drivers Licenses for All,” including illegal migrants.

Sharing is Caring!

Democrats in Michigan are pushing legislation to allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and state identification cards, aiming to remove barriers to essential services and increase road safety. The “Drive SAFE (Safety, Access, Freedom, and the Economy) Act” is at the center of this effort, introduced by Democratic leaders in the Michigan State House.

The proposal is designed to ensure all Michigan residents, regardless of immigration status, can legally drive, access healthcare, financial services, and secure housing. Supporters argue it would improve road safety by ensuring drivers are tested and insured, reducing risks on the roads.

Introduced in Michigan’s state legislature, the Drive SAFE Act is led by prominent Democrats, including State Senator Stephanie Chang and House Majority Floor Leader Abraham Aiyash. With Democrats holding the majority, the bill has gained significant momentum. This act seeks to reverse a 2008 law requiring legal residency proof for driver’s licenses and state IDs, aiming to bring Michigan in line with 19 other states and Washington D.C., where similar laws are already in place.

If passed, the Drive SAFE Act could impact approximately 55,000 undocumented immigrants in Michigan within the first three years, expanding access to essential services across the state.
