Met requires officers to declare Freemason membership.

Hundreds of Metropolitan Police officers have declared membership of the Freemasons, a High Court judge has said.

The Met announced in December that membership of the Freemasons or similar “hierarchical” organisations would be added to its declarable associations policy.

This meant officers and staff were required to declare membership “past or present” of any organisation that is “hierarchical, has confidential membership and requires members to support and protect each other”.

In response, a judge has said that more than 300 Metropolitan Police officers and staff have declared their involvement in the Freemasons or other “hierarchical associations”.
