The median net worth of Americans aged 40 to 44, excluding home equity, is $57,668. That is not a rounding error. That is the midpoint. Half of Americans in that bracket have less. This is not a fringe stat. It is from the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances, cross-checked against Census Bureau data and updated through 2024. The next update is not due until 2027. So this is the number. And it is not good.
That $57,668 includes retirement accounts, brokerage holdings, savings, and any other financial asset that is not tied up in the roof over their head. It does not include the house they live in. It does not include the car they drive. It is what they could actually use if they needed to. And for a 40-year-old, that is a problem.
The average American in this age group is entering peak earning years. They are raising kids. They are paying off student loans. They are trying to save for retirement. And they are doing it with less than $60,000 in liquid net worth. That is not a cushion. That is a crack in the floor.
The broader picture is not much better. The median net worth for all U.S. households, including home equity, is $192,900. But that number is skewed by older Americans and inflated real estate valuations. Strip out the house, and the numbers collapse. For Gen X and younger, the financial foundation is thin. And it is getting thinner.
Ready to have the shit scared out of you?
The median net worth of an American age 40-44 is only $57,668*.
Imagine being fucking 40 and only having saved fucking $58k. That's what government theft does.
