A mandatory evacuation was ordered Friday at the University of New Orleans for what officials said was a “potential threat.”

A campus-wide message was issued just before 11 a.m. that called for all students, faculty and staff to leave the area. UNO Police were going building to building directing people to leave the main campus.

“This is an actual emergency and not a test or a drill!!” the alert said.

The Times-Picayune reported the university received a call from a former student who allegedly threatened to burn down a campus building, citing Flood Protection Authority Police Superintendent Joshua Rondeno. His department is headquartered on the UNO campus.

The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the campus was being evacuated but directed additional questions to UNO Police.

Fall commencement exercises were taking place Friday at UNO Lakefront Arena, located at the separate East Campus, and were not interrupted, according to sources at the event.

Students at Hynes UNO Elementary and Ben Franklin High School, which are on the university’s main campus, were placed on lockdown.
