UAW strike of all ‘Big Three’ Detroit automakers would cost economy $5.6B
Less than a month remains until the September 15 deadline for new contracts
Union boss Shawn Fain is calling a strike authorization vote next week
A ten-day strike by the United Auto Workers that shuts down the ‘Big Three’ Detroit automakers would cost the US economy roughly $5.6 billion, according to a new analysis.
With less than a month before a September 14 deadline to reach new contracts, concerns about the impact of a walkout by UAW members at one or all of the Detroit Three are growing.
The new analysis from Anderson Economic Group, an economic consulting firm, breaks down the potential losses at each automaker, with Ford Motor set to lose $1.49 billion, General Motor $1.466 billion, and Jeep-maker Stellantis $1.183 billion.
While GM, Ford and Stellantis represent only a portion of the total US auto industry, their workers are concentrated in Michigan – a pivotal 2024 election state.
WHITMER SHOULD THINK THE ECONOMY IS ALREADY FRAGILE THIS COULD LEAD TO FIRINGS AND HURT THE BAD BAD BAD NON GREEN AUTO INDUSTRY
President Joe Biden on Monday urged the automakers and the union to come to a ‘fair agreement’ even as a strike authorization vote looms next week.
