Naima Jamal is just one of the countless victims trapped in Libya’s modern-day slave trade. A 20-year-old Ethiopian woman from Oromia, was abducted shortly after arriving in Libya in May 2024. Her family has been plunged into a nightmare of relentless threats and escalating ransom demands from human traffickers. This morning, the latest act of cruelty arrived; a video of Naima being tortured, accompanied by a new demand—$6,000 for her release.
The footage is nothing short of horrifying. In the video, Naima’s agony is palpable, her suffering a brutal testament to Libya’s unrelenting cycle of dehumanization. Alongside it came an image that speaks volumes; over 50 other victims crammed together like livestock, awaiting their turn to be sold to the highest bidder. Libya, a country steeped in the history of slavery, has become a dystopian nightmare where Black bodies are commodities, and human dignity is obliterated.
“This is not chaos or lawlessness,” warns journalist Yassin Juma, who has long documented the atrocities of Libya’s trafficking networks. “It is a deliberate, systematic annihilation of Black people—a barbaric business that thrives in plain sight. Libya is not just a failed state; it is a graveyard for Black lives.”
The suffering doesn’t stop with abductions. Traffickers openly auction men, women, and children, assigning worth to bodies based on strength, youth, or perceived sexual value. It is a chilling echo of centuries-old practices, reborn in the same cold and calculating terms.
Juma’s words cut even deeper: “Libya is a hellscape. It is Europe’s dirty secret, built on the broken backs of Black migrants who dared to dream of a better life. Arab racism fuels it; European indifference sustains it. The world sees and chooses to look away.”
Naima’s story is not unique, and that is the most damning indictment of all. Libya has become the epicenter of human degradation, a place where human lives are stripped of value, traded like goods, and discarded without remorse. The global silence surrounding this horror only deepens the darkness.
