Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste edged out Bloc Québécois incumbent Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné, winning 23,352 votes to 23,351. This stunning result brings the Liberals to 170 seats, leaving Prime Minister Mark Carney just two seats away from a majority government.
The recount process was automatic due to the slim margin, with Superior Court of Quebec Justice Danielle Turcotte overseeing the review. The recount added 74 votes to the total count, with Auguste gaining 56 votes and Sinclair-Desgagné picking up 11. The Conservative and NDP candidates also saw slight adjustments, while the Green Party lost two votes.

While judicial recounts typically review ballots that were initially deemed invalid, it remains unclear how many of these were reconsidered or if they could have altered the final result. The Liberals are now on the brink of a majority, but the battle is not over. Three more judicial recounts are pending, including one in Newfoundland and Labrador and two in Ontario. If the Liberals win all three, they will still be one seat short of the 172 needed for a majority. The recounts in Terra Nova—The Peninsulas and Milton East—Halton Hills South will begin next week, while Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore’s recount is scheduled for May 20.
The stakes could not be higher. With the Liberals just two seats away from full control, every recount matters. If these razor-thin margins continue, expect more scrutiny, more challenges, and more questions about the legitimacy of the process.
