Labour will make every UK borough take ‘fair share’ of migrants, says Rayner

Under a Labour government, every UK borough would be required to take their “fair share” of asylum seekers, as pledged by Angela Rayner, the party’s deputy leader and shadow levelling up secretary. Successful asylum seekers would become eligible for places in the 1.5 million new social housing units and homes that Labour plans to build across the country. Rayner emphasized that each borough has an obligation to accommodate asylum seekers as part of Labour’s commitment to address the current backlog of 35,000 migrants currently housed in hotels. The Conservative party raised concerns, suggesting that this policy could result in approximately 1,300 new asylum seekers being housed in every local authority if illegal migration continues at current levels over the next Parliament.
