Reports reveal that since 2010, over 400 adults convicted of rape and other grave offenses have avoided prison. Instead, they received non-custodial sentences like community service. Posting inflammatory content. Tyler Kay and Jordan Parlour, for instance, received sentences of 38 months and 20 months for posts deemed to incite hatred. The message is clear: your online words can cost you more than committing violent crimes.

This disparity is maddening. While rapists are spared the full force of the law, social media users are dealt heavy-handed punishments. Such a system not only diminishes the gravity of sexual violence but also places freedom of speech on shaky ground.

The implications are devastating. Victims of rape are denied justice, their trauma minimized. At the same time, heavy sentences for online posts chill free expression and expand state control over speech.
