The upcoming CNN presidential debate on June 27, 2024, between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will adhere to specific rules designed to ensure a more orderly and focused discussion. Here are the key changes:
- No Live Audience: Unlike previous debates, there will be no studio audience present during the debate. This decision aims to maximize the candidates’ speaking time and minimize external disruptions.
- Muted Microphones: Both candidates will stand at identical lecterns, and their microphones will be muted when it’s not their turn to speak. This measure intends to prevent interruptions that occurred in previous debates.
- No Opening Statements: Instead of opening statements, each candidate will begin with a question, followed by two minutes to respond. Rebuttals and additional discussion will follow, with visual cues indicating remaining speaking time.
- Two Commercial Breaks: For the first time, the debate will include two commercial breaks, but campaign staff won’t be allowed to interact with candidates during these intermissions.
- Closing Statements: Candidates will deliver a two-minute closing statement at the end of the debate
