Jordan Peterson has decided to leave Canada and relocate to the U.S., citing professional and political challenges. In an episode of his daughter Mikhaila Peterson’s podcast, Peterson pointed to his ongoing conflict with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and his concerns over Bill C-63, a proposed hate speech bill, as key reasons. He criticized the bill for its potential to curtail free speech, warning it could turn Canada into a “totalitarian hellhole.”
Peterson’s clash with the College of Psychologists intensified after they mandated social media communication retraining in 2022 or risk losing his license. Complaints, dating back to 2018, focused on Peterson’s comments about transgender issues, racism, and COVID-19. Following the Supreme Court of Canada’s dismissal of his appeal in August, Peterson decided to leave the country, labeling the situation as “very annoying.”
Beyond professional challenges, Peterson criticized Canada’s tax policies and governance, calling the financial climate “out of hand.” Moving to the U.S. also allows him to be closer to his daughter in Arizona. His departure has fueled conversations about free speech and dissatisfaction with Canadian governance under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Bill C-63, a significant factor in Peterson’s decision, has faced backlash from free speech groups for potential overreach. Critics argue it could lead to wrongful convictions and stifle online discourse. The Canadian government recently announced plans to split the bill into two to address these concerns while advancing child protection measures.
