In a controversial move, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has issued a stern warning to federal police officers: join or support the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, and face dismissal. This directive comes despite the AfD representing over 20% of voters, raising significant concerns about freedom of choice and basic rights for civil servants.

The decree, leaked to the conservative newspaper Junge Freiheit, outlines that any police officer engaging with the AfD will be subject to mandatory disciplinary procedures. Faeser, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has emphasized that this measure is necessary to maintain the democratic order and prevent extremist ideologies from infiltrating the civil service.

One officer, speaking anonymously, described the directive as a “massive attack on freedom of choice” and a “blatant violation of basic rights.” This sentiment is echoed by many within the police force who feel that their political affiliations should not impact their professional standing.

Critics argue that this move is not about maintaining neutrality but rather a politically motivated purge. They point to the fact that the head of federal police, Dieter Romann, is a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), suggesting a potential bias in the enforcement of this directive.
