Iran suffers near-total internet blackout with just 3 percent connectivity

Iran has gone dark. The country’s internet connectivity has collapsed to just 3% of normal levels, according to real-time data from NetBlocks and Kentik. This isn’t a glitch. It’s a deliberate blackout. The Iranian government pulled the plug as the war with Israel escalates and foreign cyberattacks intensify. The Ministry of Communications confirmed the move, calling it a “temporary restriction” to prevent “enemy misuse” of the country’s networks. The blackout began spreading from Tehran on June 16 and reached near-total shutdown by June 18.

This isn’t the first time Iran has done this. In 2019, the regime cut off the internet for six days during mass protests. The playbook hasn’t changed. When the pressure builds, the signal dies. This time, the stakes are higher. Israel has launched a wave of airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. Over 224 Iranians are dead, according to the health ministry. The Israeli Defense Forces claim to have destroyed one-third of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launchers. Iran has responded with missile barrages of its own, killing at least 24 Israelis and injuring hundreds more.
