If presidents can change red cards then every World Cup result becomes political

This story is getting bigger than one player.

Folarin Balogun was shown a red card against Bosnia, which normally means an automatic one match suspension.

Then everything changed.

After Trump spoke with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, FIFA reportedly used Article 27 to suspend Balogun’s ban for a one year probation, making him eligible to play against Belgium.

That is why Belgium is furious.

Its federation says it is challenging Balogun’s eligibility and has left every option on the table, including going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and seeking sanctions if he plays.

UEFA has also criticized the decision, saying it risks damaging the integrity of the competition.

The biggest question is not whether Balogun deserved the red card.

It is whether the rules apply the same way to everyone.

If a host nation’s president can successfully push for a disciplinary review hours before a knockout match, every future suspension will come with the same question.

Who has the better political connections?

That is the precedent people are arguing about now.

One controversial call is part of soccer.

A belief that powerful countries can get different treatment is much harder for a tournament to recover from.
