HOMELESSNESS SURGES 18%

Sharing is Caring!

Homelessness in the U.S. has surged by 18.1% this year, with over 770,000 people now living on the streets. This dramatic increase is a stark reminder of the severe housing crisis gripping the nation. Rising costs and a severe lack of affordable housing are the primary drivers behind this alarming trend.

The housing market has seen a significant spike in prices, with median home prices in the 50 largest U.S. cities rising by 5.8% through November 2024. Cities like Anaheim, California, have experienced even more dramatic increases, with home prices up by 12.5%. This surge in housing costs has made it increasingly difficult for many Americans to afford a place to live, pushing more people into homelessness.

Major cities like New York City and Chicago are particularly overwhelmed. The influx of migrants has added to the strain on these urban areas. New York City’s population grew by nearly 130,000 between 2023 and 2024, largely due to a massive surge of foreign migrants. This population boom has exacerbated the housing crisis, leading to a significant increase in homelessness. Chicago has faced similar challenges, with local organizations struggling to keep up with the increased demand for shelter and services.
