Hegseth warns China is preparing for military action in the Indo-Pacific; the threat is real and imminent.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued a stark warning about China’s military ambitions, stating that Beijing is credibly preparing to use force to shift the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. His remarks, delivered at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, have intensified concerns about China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

China’s military buildup has accelerated, with reports indicating that Beijing is actively rehearsing for a potential invasion of Taiwan. Intelligence assessments suggest that the Chinese military is expanding its capabilities, conducting large-scale exercises, and refining strategies for territorial expansion. Hegseth emphasized that the threat is real and could be imminent, urging U.S. allies to bolster their defenses.

Taiwan remains a focal point of geopolitical tensions, with Beijing repeatedly signaling its intent to bring the island under its control. The Chinese Communist Party has set a 2027 deadline for military readiness, fueling speculation that an invasion could occur within the next few years.

Hegseth’s warning comes amid escalating confrontations in the South China Sea, where Chinese forces have clashed with Philippine naval vessels. Beijing’s aggressive maneuvers in disputed waters have raised alarms among regional powers, prompting calls for increased military cooperation.

The U.S. is not backing down. Hegseth reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to its Indo-Pacific allies, stating that the U.S. will not allow China to intimidate or subordinate its partners. He urged nations to increase defense spending, citing NATO’s recent push for members to allocate 5 percent of GDP to military readiness.
