A tractor-trailer hauling hazardous material overturned, spilling the fluid and leading to the evacuation of residents and businesses on the west side of McPherson.

The McPherson fire chief says the semi was hauling 34,000 pounds of hydrochloric acid. It’s unknown how much has spilled. The truck driver made it out of the semi and refused treatment on scene.

All residents and businesses in the area have been evacuated, and roads in the area have been closed.

McPherson Fire Department Hazmat Team has made entry to the semi-truck and placed booms around a storm drain to prevent the leaking acid from entering the sewage system. An environmental remediation contractor is en route to the scene to handle the clean-up and removal of the spilled product.

Law enforcement is urging people to avoid the area while crews work to clean up. A warming shelter was set up at The Cedars at 1021 Cedars Drive.
