This BS has to stop! Georgia homeowner Loletha Hale arrested for attempting to remove a squatter.

Sharing is Caring!

In a shocking and unjust incident, Loletha Hale, a Georgia homeowner, was arrested after attempting to remove a squatter from her property. The case has ignited outrage, exposing severe flaws in the legal system that fail to safeguard homeowners’ rights.

Hale, from Clayton County, found herself trapped in an absurd and Kafkaesque situation. Despite a court order in mid-November directing squatter Sakemeyia Johnson to vacate the property, Johnson refused to leave. When Hale returned to her home, believing the squatter had complied, she was confronted by Johnson and another individual Johnson had brought in to intimidate her. When Hale tried to remove Johnson’s belongings and called the police, officers shockingly sided with the squatter. They claimed Hale lacked a signed writ of possession, the legal document required for eviction enforcement. As a result, Hale was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and a misdemeanor count of terroristic threats.

This case highlights the glaring injustice homeowners face when dealing with squatters. The process to remove squatters is unnecessarily complicated and heavily skewed against property owners. Despite having a court ruling in her favor, Hale was prevented from reclaiming her home due to bureaucratic red tape, revealing a legal system that leaves homeowners defenseless.

Squatting is no longer an isolated issue. In Georgia alone, the number of squatter cases has skyrocketed from three in 2017 to 198 in 2023, according to the Pacific Legal Foundation. This growing trend points to a systemic problem that demands urgent reform. Laws need to be restructured to ensure homeowners can reclaim their properties without being trapped in endless legal nightmares.
