George and Amal Clooney become French citizens. Actor praises privacy laws, criticizes CBS and ABC, and slams Bari Weiss.

Mr. Clooney, who owns a farmhouse in France, has said that living there enabled him and his wife, a human rights lawyer, to pursue a quieter existence with their children.

France has granted citizenship to Hollywood star George Clooney and his wife, the human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, according to government decrees issued over the weekend.

The orders of naturalization for the couple and their 8-year-old twins came in documents published by France’s Ministry of Justice. Mr. Clooney, who was born in Kentucky, also has U.S. citizenship, which French law allows him to retain.

Mr. Clooney, 64, has praised French culture and said that French privacy laws enabled him and his family to pursue a quieter existence. In an interview with the French broadcaster RTL aired early this month, Mr. Clooney said that his family had found a farmhouse in France that they loved.

“Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s No. 1 for us,” he said. “We also have a house in the United States, but our happiest place is on this farm where the kids can have fun.”

Mr. Clooney told Esquire magazine in an interview published in October that he and his family “live on a farm in France” and described a property including 100 acres of grapes, 1,200 olive trees and a vegetable garden. The French news media have reported that the Clooneys bought the house, on a vineyard outside the southern town of Brignoles, in 2021 for around $10 million.

The announcement in France’s government gazette, reported by AFP on Monday, confirmed that the American actor and his British-Lebanese partner will join their eight-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, in receiving French citizenship. Earlier this month the US actor hailed French privacy laws that keep his family shielded from paparazzi.

George Clooney tore into CBS and ABC for settling defamation lawsuits brought by President Donald Trump, rather than fight them in court, and claimed that those decisions pointedly resulted in “where we are” as a country.

Clooney, whose father Nick Clooney spent decades in broadcast journalism, told Variety on Tuesday that the network’s should instead have told the president “go f*ck yourself.”

Last spring, Clooney portrayed CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow in a stage version of Good Night, and Good Luck just as CBS News was finalising a settlement with Trump, which came as parent company Paramount sought regulatory approval for its sale to Skydance. ABC News reached its own settlement with the president over a separate defamation claim in 2024.

“If CBS and ABC had challenged those lawsuits and said, ‘Go f*ck yourself,’ we wouldn’t be where we are in the country,” Clooney said. “That’s simply the truth.”
