Gen Z is reshaping the workforce, but not in ways that employers might expect. Born between 1997 and 2012, this generation’s digital fluency and progressive values are challenging traditional workplace norms. While their strengths are undeniable, their approach to work often clashes with older generations’ expectations.
A September 2024 report from Intelligent reveals that one in six companies hesitate to hire recent graduates, and over half of hiring managers say they’re unprepared for the workforce. Many see them as entitled, easily offended, and lacking a strong work ethic. For employers, meeting Gen Z’s workplace expectations is becoming increasingly difficult, with 75% of managers reporting challenges in this area.
Gen Z’s values also differ from those of past generations. They prioritize flexibility, work-life balance, and meaningful work. A staggering 74% of Gen Z would leave a job for a low salary, and 60% expect managers to genuinely care about their well-being. More of them are opting for freelance or contract work, with many embracing “microretirement”—taking extended breaks to travel and live life on their own terms.
These preferences contribute to the rise of “quiet quitting,” where employees do only the bare minimum required. It’s frustrating for employers who are accustomed to workers going the extra mile. However, this shift in attitude underscores a broader cultural change, one that values personal fulfillment over traditional career advancement.
