France has taken a bold step by authorizing Ukraine to use SCALP-EG missiles, capable of striking targets deep within Russian territory. The announcement, confirmed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on November 18, 2024, underscores France’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s right to self-defense under international law.
“There’s no red line,” stated a French spokesperson, reaffirming that Ukraine can target strategic sites, such as a reported North Korean-command post in Russia’s Kursk region.
These SCALP-EG missiles, known as Storm Shadow in British service, are air-launched cruise missiles developed by France for precision strikes at long distances. The SCALP-EG variant is an advanced version, capable of hitting targets deep within enemy territory with high accuracy.
With a range exceeding 250 kilometers, these missiles feature a guidance system combining GPS and terrain-matching technology, enabling navigation through complex environments. Typically launched from fighter jets like the Rafale or Mirage 2000, SCALP missiles are primarily used for strategic strikes on high-value targets, such as military infrastructure, command centers, and missile defense systems.
The decision comes amid reports of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces, marking an escalation in the conflict. By empowering Ukraine’s air force with advanced weaponry, France aims to strengthen Kyiv’s ability to push back against Russian aggression and external reinforcements.
