The Strasburg police department released body camera, surveillance camera and 911 call of an officer Involved in a fatal shooting that occurred on december 17, 2023.

At 10:26pm, Strasburg police department received a 9-1-1 call from the Ramada Inn at 21 Signal Knob Drive, Strasburg/Shenandoah Valley, Virginia regarding a female acting erratically, damaging property, and threatening people in the lobby.

The suspect was later identified as Melissa Renee Tompkins, 40 years old.

In an unrelated incident on October 7, 2020 A Fauquier County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested and charged Melissa Renee Tompkins, aged 37 at the time with Grand Larceny, Drunk in Public and Driving with a Suspended license after Reckless Driving Complaints that led to a Stolen Vehicle.

Grieving family of shooting victim says she struggled with addiction

As the Virginia State Police continue their investigation into the Dec. 17 police-involved shooting death of Melissa R. Tompkins in Strasburg, her family is grieving their loss.

Tompkins’ father, Garrett Tompkins, 63, and grandmother, Phyllis Tompkins, 83, both of Pound, Va., spoke this week about the love they have for Melissa and the devastating toll drugs took on her life.

Tompkins, 40, was shot and killed by a Strasburg police officer who was responding to a 911 call for a disturbance at a hotel on Signal Knob Drive. The caller reported a person “acting erratically, damaging property, and threatening people” inside the hotel, according to police reports. The officer encountered the suspect, identified later as Tompkins, in the rear parking lot of the hotel, a Virginia State Police report says.

According to the report, Tompkins attacked the officer, grabbed his baton and used it to hit him in the head. The officer fired his weapon and struck Tompkins multiple times. A state police spokesman said this week that the officer “used his taser and other non-lethal methods in an attempt to control the situation.” Tompkins later died at Winchester Medical Center from her injuries, according to the state police release. The officer was treated for minor injuries at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and released.
