FBI formally investigates Letitia James for mortgage fraud

Federal authorities have officially opened a criminal investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, focusing on allegations that she falsified mortgage records to secure favorable loan terms. The probe, led by the FBI’s Albany office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New York’s Northern District, follows a criminal referral from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte.

James is accused of misrepresenting key details on mortgage applications, including falsely claiming a Virginia property as her primary residence in 2023. Investigators are also examining a Brooklyn property purchased in 2001, where discrepancies in residency status have raised further concerns. If proven, these allegations could constitute violations of federal statutes related to wire fraud, mail fraud, and bank fraud.
