Farmer warning about new OSHA regulations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed a new rule to address heat-related illnesses and deaths. Here’s what farmers need to know:

  • Scope and Impact:
    • The proposed rule would impact more than 105,000 farms and related agribusinesses, affecting nearly 1.14 million farm and agricultural processing workers.
    • Sectors like meatpacking, dairy processing, and fruit and vegetable farming would be particularly affected.
  • Requirements:
    • Employers, including farmers, would need to develop a Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (HIIPP).
    • Heat conditions for workers would need to be monitored, even for indoor work sites.
    • Mandatory rest breaks every two hours would be required when the heat index reaches 90°F.
    • Training for supervisors and employees about heat risks would also be necessary.
  • Timeline:
    • The proposed rule has a 120-day comment period after publication in the Federal Register.
    • If it survives legal challenges, it would go into effect in 2026.
