The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed a new rule to address heat-related illnesses and deaths. Here’s what farmers need to know:
- Scope and Impact:
- The proposed rule would impact more than 105,000 farms and related agribusinesses, affecting nearly 1.14 million farm and agricultural processing workers.
- Sectors like meatpacking, dairy processing, and fruit and vegetable farming would be particularly affected.
- Requirements:
- Employers, including farmers, would need to develop a Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (HIIPP).
- Heat conditions for workers would need to be monitored, even for indoor work sites.
- Mandatory rest breaks every two hours would be required when the heat index reaches 90°F.
- Training for supervisors and employees about heat risks would also be necessary.
- Timeline:
- The proposed rule has a 120-day comment period after publication in the Federal Register.
- If it survives legal challenges, it would go into effect in 2026.
