Family members of Boeing crash victims are fiercely opposed to President Biden’s proposed plea deal with the company, arguing that the rushed negotiations fail to hold Boeing accountable. The deal stems from the tragic crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which took 346 lives.
The plea deal, criticized as a “sweetheart” deal, has sparked outrage for its leniency, particularly in light of Boeing’s alleged misconduct. The crashes were caused by a faulty flight control system, with accusations that Boeing misled regulators. The proposed deal’s provisions, such as appointing a diversity-focused compliance monitor, were deemed insufficient and contributed to a judge’s rejection of the agreement.
Despite paying significant fines, including a $243.6 million penalty for violating a prior agreement, Boeing’s penalties have been viewed as inadequate. Victims’ families are demanding harsher consequences, asserting that this plea deal doesn’t sufficiently address the scale of the tragedy or the company’s deceptive actions.
