Fairfax County, Virginia, is grappling with a significant financial challenge, facing a $300 million budget deficit. This shortfall has been exacerbated by the county’s expenditure of $142 million on teaching migrant children English last year, a figure that has surged by 50% from a few years prior.
The Trump administration has expanded the authority of immigration agents, allowing them to make arrests at previously protected locations such as schools and churches. Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman stated, “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest.” This move is intended to empower Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to enforce immigration laws more effectively and apprehend criminal aliens, including those accused of serious crimes such as murder and rape.
The decision has sparked immediate reactions from various stakeholders. School systems have pledged to make ICE’s job as challenging as possible, while an Obama-linked progressive group has urged schools to resist the new policy. The group argues that schools with higher numbers of illegal immigrants receive more taxpayer money, highlighting the financial implications of the policy change.
If only there was some way to reduce spending so we don't have to *cut the fire and police departments*.
