The Minnesota House just voted on a bill that would have required doctors to provide life-saving medical care to babies born alive after failed abortion attempts. Not a single Democrat supported it. The bill failed.
Every Republican present voted in favor of the measure, which sought to ensure that infants who survive abortion procedures receive the same medical attention as any other newborn. Yet, despite its straightforward premise—saving the life of a living, breathing baby—the bill was rejected along party lines.
Democrats in the legislature opposed the measure, arguing that existing laws already address medical care for newborns and that the bill was unnecessary. But that claim doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. If such protections were already in place, why block a bill reinforcing them? Opponents also suggested the bill was politically motivated, a familiar talking point whenever pro-life legislation is introduced.
