The announcement of the Stargate project has stirred significant debate in the tech world. President Donald Trump, on his first full day of his second term, unveiled this ambitious joint venture, promising a $500 billion investment in U.S. artificial intelligence infrastructure. The project, backed by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, aims to build colossal data centers and create over 100,000 jobs.
However, not everyone is convinced. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk quickly cast doubt on the financial backing of the project. Musk, who has a history of rivalry with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, claimed that the companies involved “don’t actually have the money” to fulfill their pledge. He specifically pointed out that SoftBank has “well under $10B secured”.
Altman, in response, defended the project’s credibility and invited Musk to visit the first site already under construction in Texas. He emphasized that the Stargate project is “great for the country” and urged Musk to put the U.S. first in his new role.
