Egg prices plummet 63% in March

Egg prices have taken a sharp dive in March 2025, dropping a staggering 63% from their recent peak. Just a few weeks ago, shoppers were shelling out a jaw-dropping $8.17 per dozen. But today, the average price has fallen to $4.90, signaling the first signs of relief for consumers who have been grappling with sky-high prices. This sudden price shift is a direct result of the rebound in egg supplies after months of scarcity. The catastrophic effects of the avian flu outbreak, which wiped out millions of poultry, sent prices soaring. Now, with production returning to more stable levels, the market is finally adjusting.

While wholesale prices are already seeing a significant dip, retailers are still hesitant to lower prices on store shelves. This caution is understandable; with the memory of fluctuating egg prices still fresh in their minds, grocery stores are treading carefully. They worry that adjusting prices too quickly could lead to losses if supply chains become unpredictable again. This means that while consumers are starting to see relief at checkout counters, the full impact of the price drop hasn’t reached everyone just yet.

The avian flu, which caused the culling of over 111 million birds since 2022, was a primary driver behind the explosive price hike. It’s clear now that this disease had a devastating effect on the egg market, but fortunately, no major outbreaks have occurred recently. As a result, egg production is slowly recovering, with the national egg inventory growing by over 4%. That being said, experts remain cautious, warning that the egg market could still be vulnerable to new disruptions, whether from future disease outbreaks, rising feed costs, or unpredictable weather patterns. While this price drop is a welcome change, the reality is that the egg market is anything but stable right now. It will take time to truly stabilize prices, and even longer for them to return to pre-inflation levels.
